DC Ultimate Championships 2009 Tournament Recap

Truck Stop triumphs in inaugural DC Ultimate Championship

Truck Stop competed in its second tournament of 2009 this past weekend, taking on a number of area teams on the National Mall under flawless blue skies.  With white-marbled monuments providing an idyllic backdrop, the Truck rolled to convincing wins over all three opponents on day 1, beating Car Bomb, Eastern Motors, and Floodwall by a combined score of 39-10.  The Truck gave up only one point in the second half all day.

Sunday saw more of the same, as the Truck beat Burn in a game to 13 to close out pool play, then beat them again in a game to 15 in the semifinals.  This set up a rematch with fellow DC/Baltimore squad Eastern Motors, a fun fast-paced game that ended with the Truck victorious, 15-8.

The inaugural DC Ultimate Championship commemorates the life of Robert “Robear” Nesheim, a lifelong Ultimate player who passed away suddenly on the playing field in 2003.  His wife and daughters were present; and it was quite moving  to hear tournament organizer Tom Coffin speak about Robear, and to see his wife and family still so supportive of the sport and the spirit of the game.  Truck Stop is proud to represent the greater DC area at the highest level of the game, and proud to carry forward the spirit of the game embodied by Robear.  The tourney also sought to raise awareness about the dangers of climate change, and included an award presentation by the founder of 350.org, an organization devoted to reducing carbon levels in the atmosphere.

All in all, a strong tournament for the Truck and a pleasure to represent the District at its home tourney: now to prepare for Colorado.
